Lakewood Church is one of the largest independent churches in the United States. The new church home was created from the Compaq Center, a former sports stadium and entertainment venue in the Greenway Plaza area in central Houston, Texas. Facilities include the sanctuary, religious education classrooms, childcare center, and offices.
The landscape was designed to enhance views of the massive building from the adjacent freeway while providing a human-scaled entry experience for the congregation. Large existing oaks were preserved, and new Southern Magnolias balance the site. Smaller hollies provide seasonal interest at the terrace level. Flowering shrubs and groundcovers bloom sequentially year-round along the frontage and at entries, while shade-loving gingers, ferns and groundcovers enliven the covered drop-off area on the east.
Lauren Griffith Associates provided design, construction documents and construction administration for the landscape and irrigation for Morris Architects and Studio RED Architects. The project was completed in 2005 and received a Texas Construction Magazine Award of Merit.
